FireFox 3.0 Beta available…

Update! (2/13/08) Beta 3 Official release : http://tinyurl.com/ysrmxd

I am hoping that they improve the memory allocation in this version (and the leaks). I’ve noticed the FireFox2 application consumes a lot of resources and when I’m in a test pattern ( 3-5 applications running + firebug + multiple tabs ), it crashes or hangs a lot. More impressions as I get a chance to play around with it.

Some cool features i’ve noticed..

  • Right off the bat performance wise it appears to be a lot faster (I’m going to let an instance with 20 tabs sit overnight and see if it eats up my memory like 2.x did)
  • Visually some things have changed, for example rendering of HTML link elements appear differently (the underline style). Also, password fields seem to have changed from stars to bullet on certain sites. These are likely both side effects from the Gecko 1.9 architecture that has been implemented in this release.
  • I also really like the bookmark ‘tagging’ that has been added.
  • Plug-in/Extension manager for auto version and compatibility checking is pretty cool but is something that I expected earlier so to me its not really a shiny new feature.
  • Support of Javascript 1.8 (with JSON encode/decode soon?)
  • Clicking on the favicon in the navigation toolbar displays website ownership and information.

I just read an article that the current build passed the Acid2 test.
